The Tomte is a mythical creature of Scandinavian Folklore, a small elderly man, often bearded and dressed as a farmer, with a grey or red cap. He was believed in ancient times, to be the soul or spirit of the home. Folklore tells us that he has a caring spirit, but if you offend him, he will leave or cause mischief. However a lovely bowl of hot porridge, as a thank you for guarding your home, should put a smile on his face on Christmas night. This wonderful character has been associated with Christmas ever since.
